The main dish is the featured or primary dish in a meal. It is also commonly known as the entree or main course. The main dish of a meal typically includes a meat, vegetable and a starch. the main dish is typically the biggest, heaviest, heartiest, and most complex food option in the course of a meal. The main ingredient is usually meat or fish; or in vegetarian meals the main course sometimes attempts to mimic a meat. It is most often preceded by an appetizer, soup, and/or salad, and followed by a dessert.
